Knotted necklace
Knotted necklace

This is a three strand necklace using metallic thread.  Metallic thread is a bit more difficult to work with than silk thread, so try out some knotting with silk thread before you tackle the metallics!

Materials:
Metallic thread
1 pkg. Bead mix (a variety of 4, 6, and 8mm semi-precious beads, crystal beads, and seed beads)
2 fold over crimp ends
2" extension chain
1 small trigger clasp
Twistd wire needle
Cement glue

Cut 3 pieces of thread measuring atleast 2 times the final length desired (16-18 inches x 2).   For the first strand, lay out your bead mix on a bead mat, allowing about 1/2" between each bead station.  The layout can be any combination that appeals to you. Here is an example of a layout for the first strand using one of our bead mixes to get you started:

1  4mm almond pearl
2  4mm clear crystal/keshi pearl/4mm clear crystal
3  4mm peach pearl
4  4mm clear crystal/keshi pearl/4mm clear crystal
Repeat this pattern for the length of this strand.

Once you have finished laying out the first strand, you can begin stringing and knotting.
Thread yor metallic thread onto a twisted wire needle, and then begin by tying an overhand knot at one end of the thread.  Be sure to leave a 3" tail at the end.

String on the first bead station in your layout.  Using a beading awl to control the placement of the next knot, tie another overhand knot, placing snug against the last bead in the station.  Continue knoting and stringing the remaining sections.

Layout the second strand, using the first strand as a guide.  The layout for the second  strand should vary a bit so that the larger beads for this strand do not lie on top of the large beads of the first strand (they should be staggered).  Here's an example for the second strand:

1  Keshi Pearl
2  4mm peach pearl
3  4mm peach crystal/6mm white pearl/4mm peach crystal
4  4mm almond pearl
5  keshi pearl
6  4mm almond pearl/6mm peach pearl/4mm almond pearl
7  4mm peach pearl
8  keshi pearl
9  4mm almond pearl/6mm peach pearl/4mm almond pearl
Repeat this pattern for the lenght of this strand.

String and knot the second strand, and then repeat the layout and stringing process described above for the third strand.  When you have finished the third strand, lay the three strands together.  You can make all strands the same length, giving the necklace a clustered look, or you can make each strand successively longer for a graduated look.  Check the lengths, and then tie all three strands together into one overhand knot on each end.

Put a drop of cement glue on each of these knots and trim the ends close to the knots.  Place the knot into a foldover crimp, and then bend the sides of the crimp end down over the knot.  Attach a clasp and the extension chain to the crimp ends.  Finish the chain by adding a crystal drop at the end.
